Sonnet for a Swinging Girl
Written for the May Year 4 topic of
Amelie's poem: ‘The wind tastes of honey’ and/or ‘Do animals
know the truth?’
My fairhaired girl, strands blow around your face.
From azure eyes your zest for life shines out.
Your slight frame, full of fun, swings high through space-
Such confidence - there seems no room for doubt!
Soft, chilly cheeks glow in complexion pale.
That winning smile, so white, lights up the world.
Your tiny feet, new shod, skywards do sail
While little legs stretch taut, toes tightly curled.
The breeze, its force increasing, now is strong.
With care she grasps some air, mouth open wide.
Repeatedly she lifts handfuls along
And gulps it down then scoops yet more inside.
''What are you doing?'' ''Eating up the wind.''
''It tastes of honey,'' she replied and grinned.
